This article explores whether Belgrade is a beautiful city from the perspective of a Filipino expat whose initial impression of worn facades, graffiti, and stark brutalist architecture gradually evolved into an appreciation for its quiet beauty. Beyond postcard views, Belgrade reveals character and charm to those willing to look closer.

Often I’d be asked,
“Do you find Belgrade beautiful?”
The answer depends on what you mean by beautiful.
If we’re talking purely about aesthetics — the kind that makes you gasp the moment you arrive — then honestly, I didn’t find Belgrade beautiful when I first got here.
It wasn’t love at first sight.
The buildings felt worn.
Many facades were — and still are — covered in graffiti. Not thoughtful street art, but layers of scribbles that made the walls feel tired and neglected.
The city didn’t sparkle the way I had imagined.
I remember thinking, Is this it?
There was nothing breathtaking. It all felt gray.
And yet.
Somehow… it grew on me.
The Beauty of Rough Edges
Belgrade is not conventionally beautiful.
It doesn’t immediately impress you. And that’s exactly where the charm hides.
The weathered walls.
The mismatched architecture.
Graffiti sitting beside historic walls.
The contrast between grand Austro-Hungarian facades and stark brutalist blocks.
It’s a city with history written directly on its skin.
And once you stop looking for postcard beauty, you start seeing character.
Belgrade Photowalks: Seeing Beauty in the Ordinary
I love taking pictures.
At some point, I began taking my camera on long walks around the city.
No destination.
No plan.
Just wandering.
It felt like getting to know Belgrade more intimately. Slowly, I began to love what I saw.
There is a kind of beauty that demands attention — polished, symmetrical, curated.
But there is another kind.
The kind that lives in texture, contrast, history, and rough edges — the honest kind.
The kind you only see when you stop searching for postcard perfection.
Once I stopped looking for what I thought a beautiful city should look like, I started seeing what was already there.
Character.
And that changed everything.
It Grows On You
If you asked me during my first year here whether I found this city beautiful, I probably would have hesitated.
Now?
Now I love it.
I find beauty beyond the typical tourist spots.
The sunset over Branko’s Bridge, warm light against concrete and traffic.
The golden light stretching across a quiet sidewalk at sunrise.
A Yugo passing by — small and old, a relic of another time.
The golden-to-pastel sky at 25 Maj as the day fades into evening.
The unpredictable weather.
The stark, boxy blocks of New Belgrade.
Even the graffiti that once bothered me.
I love the city as it is — imperfect, but quietly charming.
So do I find Belgrade beautiful?
Yes — just not in a loud way.
