How to Pass the Serbian Driving Test With Limited Serbian
When I took my driving test, I could understand about 70% of the Serbian language, and I still passed both the theory and practical exams.
Here’s how I did it.
1. The Theory Test
The theory test focuses on Serbian traffic laws, road signs, right-of-way rules, and general safety regulations for drivers. When I enrolled, the school handed us a manual in Cyrillic — „ПРИРУЧНИК ЗА ПОЛАГАЊЕ ВОЗАЧКОГ ИСПИТА ‘Б’ КАТЕГОРИЈА“. The lessons were, of course, also conducted entirely in Serbian.
Reading technical traffic terms in Cyrillic and following the lessons entirely in Serbian felt intimidating. But I was determined to pass.
During the lessons, I didn’t understand everything in real time, so I recorded them, and listened again at home. I used Google Translate to clarify unfamiliar terms and took the mock exam repeatedly.
Truly understanding the traffic laws, road signs, and regulations made a huge difference for me. I passed the theory test on my first attempt — in Cyrillic! 🎉
2. The Practical Driving Test
The practical exam evaluates your vehicle control, ability to follow traffic signs and signals, proper speed management, safe lane changes, parking maneuvers, and overall awareness in real traffic conditions. The examiner observes how safely and confidently you drive.
I requested an English-speaking instructor so I could clearly understand the instructions during lessons. I also added extra driving hours beyond the required 40 until I felt confident. I was honest about where I struggled (hello, parking 😄), and we practiced those areas repeatedly.
During the test, my biggest challenge was managing my nerves. On my first attempt, I was so nervous that I mentally froze during the very first parking maneuver. It was embarrassing. 🤦🏻♀️
Fortunately, I passed on my third attempt. 🙏✨

Long story short, passing the Serbian driving test with mid-level Serbian is absolutely possible. I’m proof of that. The key is strategic preparation and managing your nerves. I would also honestly say that having a driving instructor who not only speaks English but is also patient and a good teacher made a huge difference for me.
If you’re in Belgrade and planning to take driving lessons, I highly recommend Autoškola Pavlin. They were professional, patient, and supportive throughout the entire process.
